South Africa has eleven official languages and Xhosa is the one most spoken in Walmer Township. According to this the spoken language in most of the creches is Xhosa as well, while in the schools, however, English is most common. In order to prepare the children for school, Izizwe is running the so called literacy program. The basic English lessons that we give are orientated on the caps curriculum, which is also used at the primary schools. Our overall goal is that the children get used to hearing and speaking English so that they are well prepared for school. Furthermore we include drawing and some games so that the children learn English while having fun.
